Six media bands take to the stage Friday, Nov. 4, 2016 at The Opera House, 735 Queen St. E. And here they are:
The Toronto Sun’s Screaming Headlines. We think we’re pretty good. But let last year’s judges do the talking. “No frills passion… wicked…” “The tightest band up there.” And guitarist Natalia Manzocco? “A rock ‘n’ roll goddess!” What they said.
Bulletin Kill has been hard at work over the past year writing original songs and is excited to share some of their own tunes with the Newzapalooza audience, in between some rocking covers. Representing a mixture of media outlets, they’re united by their love of music and also the excuse to spend most Friday nights jamming. Bringing you smooth harmonies, killer riffs and catchy hooks are: BNN’s Greg Bonnell on guitar and vocals, Allison Jones from The Canadian Press on bass and vocals, and the Globe and Mail’s Dan Bristow bringing the thunder on the drums.
Conrad Black Sabbath — a band one angry Facebook commenter recently described as “irrelevant hipsters,” painted it black at Newzapalooza last year to claim first place. This year, the rap/metal/country hybrid will paint it orange for reasons that have nothing to do with Halloween. Returning to the stage this year: Sarah Boesveld and Kagan MacLeod on vocals, Jon Dekel on drums, Stewart Bell on bass and Drew Hasselback and Ron Wadden on guitars.
The Globe and Mail’s Fun With Discipline wants your special day to be unforgettable. Our 13-member ensemble will meet with you in advance to create a total entertainment experience tailored to your needs. Specializing in weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and VSP retirement parties, Fun With Discipline will be sure to keep you and your guests dancing all night long!!! Bookings start at $4440.
Formed in August 2016, The Huffingtones are hot off the press and ready to distribute the rock, and the roll. First time Newzapaloozans, this band of hooligans from The Huffington Post promises to blow both the crowd and competition away. Mark Cavalcante (guitar & vocals), Madelyn Chung (keyboard), Dan Carroll (keyboard), Kent Pawziuk (bass), Greg Warden (drums), Kyle Leeson (guitar & vocals), Sabrina Campolucci (manager).
They’re the new kids on the block – if the New Kids On The Block sounded like grungy-90s-punk-meets-early-2000s-garage-rock. Gracing the Newza stage for the first time this year, Death Hoax is a rowdy, ragtag four piece featuring guitar slinger and Sportsnet designer Bradley Reinhardt, beat-keeper and novelist-slash-journalist Nathan Whitlock, bass player and Canadian Press reporter Paola Loriggio, and lead singer and Toronto Star reporter Lauren Pelley.
