Meet the bands

Here are the bands from Newza 2011. Stay tuned for information about this year's lineup.

  • The Back Issues - Maclean's
  • Holy Joe and the Priciples - Toronto Star
  • The Everywhere - CityTV
  • Mental Circuit - Reuters
  • The Snipes - The Globe & Mail
  • The Screaming Headlines - Toronto Sun
  • Stimulus Package - The Canadian Press & The Globe & Mail

And this year's special guests:

  • Andrew Cash & Charlie Angus

......

The Back Issues are Jen Cutts, Tom Henheffer, Brian D. Johnson, Peeter Kopvillem, Sean McCluskey, Joe Power, Brad Reinhardt and Andrew Tolson. When not enjoying each other's company for up to 12 hours a day, the Back Issues also like to play rock and and roll. It's a little known fact that he founder of Maclean's Magazine, Lieutenant Colonel John Bayne Maclean, was an early influence on both Chuck Berry and James Brown and even recorded several uncredited tracks with Buddy Holly, though it's unclear what instrument Maclean played.

Sources close to Holly at the time of his death suggested that Maclean was scheduled to fly on the same plane that killed the influential early rocker. In the spirit of their founder, the Back Issues carry on the tradition of driving home the truth, both adhering to factual accuracy and rocking the house.

The Deadlines are back for their fourth kick at the can. Formed 4 years ago in a bar across the street from Mother Star, The Deadlines shed their social leanings to bring some serious fun back to rock and roll.

Lead by the silky tones of vocalist and guitarist Steve Tustin, The Deadlines epitomize the “garage band” ethos. Mike ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly is on guitar, while bassist Duncan Boyce and drummer Brett ‘Hit Man’ Lodge keep perfect time. “We’re the Keith Richards of rock,” admits Kelly. “Loose and fun.”

The Everywhere
The Everywhere are back in the news, well at Citytv anyway and its time to look at this phenomenon: by breakfast television standards its too late. Up until now "The Everywhere" have been associated with kooks and oddballs in fact the band admits to being members of both groups. So where did they come from? Here, there, out of nowhere but somewhere within Citytv and Rogers TV to support a great charitable cause and create some fun and loud entertainment.

The Everywhere want you out there and support The Children's Aid Foundation. The Kooky Everywhere's are Andrew Palframan, Mark Domitric, Steve Dagg, Caitlin Smith, and Wayne Smith.

Holy Joe

Introducing, Holy Joe & The Principles 2.0. The Toronto Star brings an 8-person ensemble extraordinaire to this year’s Newzapalooza show, assembled in haste after last year’s Star act bowed out at the last minute, which surely had nothing to do with the fact that three of the four band members had recently been bought out or laid off.

In three short weeks, my friends, Holy Joe & The Principles 2.0 began with nothing but a whim and ended up with a powerhouse line-up, which is rumoured to include dancers.

Robert “Clarence” Cribb on tenor sax, keys and vocals; Robyn “Dee-lite” Doolittle on vocals and dance; Wendy “The Chops” Gillis on trumpet; Brendan “Killer” Kennedy on rhythm guitar; Jesse “Big-bottomed” McLean on bass; “Great Scott” Simmie on drums; Donovan “The Axe” Vincent on guitar; and Michael “The Wonder” Woods on alto sax. On stage, in spirit, will be the band’s namesake and legendary Star publisher, Holy Joe Atkinson.

......

From the newsroom on King emerges a new band known as Mental Circuit. The band members are Plaz on guitar/vocals, Mr.Joe on bass and DuHast On drums. Their original brand of rock will help you fight off those demons. Get Ready - Get Mental.

......

Over the years, thanks to corporate downsizing, The Toronto Sun's Screaming Headlines have gone through guitarists like Spinal Tap has gone through drummers. But they are currently grooving with the talented tandem of Tycho Manson (no relation) and Ron Lund. The screaming has been a constant, with serviceable lead vocals from Jim Slotek (known as "Batman" to Johnny Rivers fans), bombastic bass playing from Ian Harvey and downright dangerous drumming from Jonathan ("J.J.") Jenkins. Their influences range from Elvis (Presley) to Elvis (Costello).

......

The Snipes
The Snipes formed in the Globe's business section to pursue their first loves: drinking beer and loud original guitar rock (but beer). Aron Yeomanson sings and plays guitar, Steve Ladurantaye is on guitar, Eric Atkins plays drums, and Vince Tourangeau is the guest bassist, the 10th person to have held that spot in three years.

Stimulus Package
Stimulus Package: Not since the death of Michael Jackson has the music business been such a buzz. For years the much anticipated Stimulus Package reunion looked like it would never happen. "We love playing together, we're like family", guitarist Greg Bonnell said in an interview from his home in Tibet. But lead singer Joe Sintzel describes it another way, "We all hate each other really, some of us haven't spoken in years."

It's clear that the 'Smell The Money' tour came together for just that, the money. But the aging rockers haven't exactly stood still. "It's great not to have to play large venues with screaming girls", said guitarist Graeme Roy. "We've been playing mostly in church basements, casinos, that sort of thing. The acoustics are much better."
